Bad Hair Day

Have any of you done something REALLY bad with your hair? When I was in 7th grade, I was touching up my bowl cut with my dad’s beard trimmer and decided to see what would happen if got close to my eyebrows. A few moments later, I had shaved a thin, vertical line in each eyebrow. I tried to tell everyone that my sister was to blame, but no one believed me and I was stuck with four eyebrows for a LONG time. We’ve all had bad hair days, but I think we would all agree; Samson had the worst….

Show No Partiality

“My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing… have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?” – James 2:1-4 Who is comfortable at Wausau Alliance Church when they walk in the door? I Do Believe; Help My Unbelief!

Luke 22:60-61 – “Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.” Peter’s denial of Jesus was pretty brazen. He just spent the last three years of his life with Jesus, learning under him, watching him do miraculous things, and being empowered to do great things himself. Peter’s life was wrapped around Jesus for those three years; yet in this…

Have You Been Playing the Church Game?

Matthew 23:2-3 – “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, so practice and observe whatever they tell you – but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice.” Can you imagine what it would be like for someone to say of you what Jesus said of the Pharisees in Matthew 23:3? “Believe what they tell you to do, but don’t live like they are living.” Professional sports coaches almost always are in their roles because they used to play the sport. Joe Torre, Don Mattingly, Mike Matheny, and Joe Girardi were all baseball players who…

True Greatness

“And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, ’Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you… And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.” Mark 10:35, 41 Read Mark 10:35 by itself. Consider how twisted their request in v. 35 is. “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” Not even considering what they asked in v. 37, let’s think about a few things. James and John have developed a comfort level with Jesus that…

John 6:35, 37, 40 – “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst… All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out… For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.’” With news of the Ebola virus beginning to spread a bit more in the U.S., we as…
